This collection consists of personal name files which document the activities of the university administration, faculty, staff, students, alumni, honorary degree recipients and other individuals who have been important to the history of the University. Files vary considerably in size, from one sheet to several folders, and may include articles, biographical sketches, correspondence, curriculum vitae / resumes, media clippings, obituaries and memorials, press releases, and miscellaneous publications. The presidents of the university are particularly well-represented, with extensive biographical files on Thomas G. Carpenter (1969-1980), Andrew A. Robinson, Jr. (Interim President, 1980-1982), Curtis L. McCray (1982-1988), Adam W. Herbert (1989-1998), Anne H. Hopkins (1999-2002), and John A. Delaney (2003-).

In 1965 the Florida Legislature authorized the establishment of a state university in Jacksonville. State Senator John E. Mathews, Jr. introduced a higher education bill calling for a feasibility study for a Duval County "senior" college.
